MTV Movie Awards

The MTV music Awards were definitely surprising this year. Between Rebel Wilson’s awkward, blunt and raunchy statements (and outfit), Aubrey Plaza “Kanye’ing” Will Ferrell’s award and Kesha and Snoop sharing some sort of smoke on stage, we the audience were left awkwardly amused

Fast forward to the hair and fashion, Hayley Williams of Paramore was rocking some serious spring hair, half hot pink and the other neon orange. While that is more for the bold, Selena Gomez went for a more temporary style, but just as fun, with a teased pompadour into a long braid over her shoulder.

Brittany Snow is another celebrity who recently chopped her locks into a sexy, blunt, shoulder-grazing bob. Kerry Washington looked sophisticated, flawless and fun as always, with her hair and makeup so simple and a pop of yellow from the train of her dress. Melissa McCarthy wore a black dress, layered chunky jewelery, and long loose waves- perfect. I had nightmares about Kesha, and that’s all I’m really going to say about that. I will say in conclusion, that Macklemore can do no wrong and I wish more guys had the confidence, aka SWAG, that he does.

Tried & Tested: Extensions at Architeqt

The picturesque salon and gallery gives clients an array of ways to get longer, fuller manes.

APRIL 01, 2013

Located in the posh Washington Square West area, Architeqt Salon & Gallery lures clients in with their unstoppable team of talented stylists and a contemporary atmosphere. Offering a variety of specialized services from dry haircuts to color and styling, the salon also features hair extensions; a rapidly growing trend in the hairstyling world.

Owned and operated by some of the industry’s finest—Pawel Jan and Alexey Kats—Architeqt opened its doors in October of 2012. Aware of the popularity of extensions, the duo enlisted Brittiany Cunningham as the salon’s resident length and volume guru.

“Extensions aren’t just for lengthening anymore,” says Cunningham, a five-year extension veteran equipped with her own fabulously fierce red weave. “A lot of women aren’t happy with the volume and density of their hair, and another common use for extensions is for filling in on thinning sides. That being said, extensions are also the perfect conclusion for women who are trying to grow out their short cuts.”

After a complimentary in-depth consultation at the salon where clients choose between a myriad of hair types and colors for their extensions, a fresh, dry haircut is given by co-owner Pawel, necessary due to the length of time the extensions will be in use. All extension options are provided to Architeqt through Tru Beauty Concepts—the area’s premier salon and spa distributor.

Among the most popular extensions are Hotheads and Balmain, companies that both provide 100% Remy Indian human hair. Hotheads is the first brand to offer tape extensions, which have impacted the industry with a patented medical adhesive, guaranteeing strong, beautiful hair for 8-10 weeks—and an added bonus of being reusable. In conjunction with Tru Beauty Concepts and Architeqt, Hothead extension certification is available to stylists and taught by Cunningham.

Offering versatile fusion extensions that take roughly three-five hours to complete, Balmain’s Kardashian-esque hair lasts three-five months and goes undetected on the head, one to one and a half inches from the scalp.

Ranging from roughly $600 for a full head of tape extensions to $1,500 for a full head of fusion extensions, all clients leave the salon prepared with instructions on how to keep their style fresh in the coming months. Recommendations like using strictly sulfate-free shampoo, not conditioning roots, refraining from going to bed with wet hair, and using a special brush twice a day to prevent dreading are carefully explained to each client before scheduling a follow-up appointment in two weeks to tighten and adjust. 265 S. 10th St., Washington Square West, Philadelphia, 267-519-3778
